I walk up the familiar stairs and turn to the right to go down to Lily’s room. Zinnia isn’t really the dress up type and Lily is, so it just made sense for them to get ready in Lily’s room. I walk into the room and see Lily standing there with her pitch-black hair in gorgeous Dutch braid holiday updo, matches her perfect light blue ball gown. Simply divine on her, with the sleeveless off the shoulder bodice, she looks like the modern-day Cinderella. Zinnia walks out of the bathroom and I lose my cool and start crying. I have NEVER in all the years I have known Zinnia ever seen her dress up, let alone wear make-up or have her hair done up. Zinnia wore simple hair styles, ponytail, messy bun, or down to match her sister’s straight black hair. Today, her hair was all curled up in an elegant updo. Her gown was perfect, simple emerald green floor length gown with the high neckline and the sleeveless geometric cutout bodice, it reminds me of Merida from the movie Brave.

“Mom! You are home!” Lily shrieks as she dives into my arms.

“You called me mom.” I say crying happy tears.

“I have been thinking, and I decided that I should call you what you are, if that’s okay with you.”

“I would love that more than anything.” I hug her again and in walks Jasmine and Calla who also have on Disney Princess inspired ball gowns. Calla has on a yellow ball gown similar to Lily’s gown. Judging by her hair style, I am assuming it is Belle. Jasmine is wearing a ball gown that the top is a jeweled white off the shoulders bodice and is a different color than the bottom, which is a teal tulle ball gown. Her hair is done up like Princess Jasmine. Fighting back more tears, I say “You girls will be the envy of everyone at the prom!” I pause looking at each one of the girls again and I ask, “What’s with the Disney Theme?”

“Ask Valedictorian over there.” Calla says pointing to Zinnia.

“Wait…this PRINCESS thing was YOUR idea?” I ask Zinnia.

“I thought we needed one last fairy tale before our senior year. Life is not a fairy tale so something might as well be.” That’s the Zinnia I know and love.

“I still do not understand why you are so cynical about love.” I say to Zinnia.

“I wouldn’t expect you to understand” Zinnia snips.

“Girls, your dads are down stairs…Give Zinnia and me a moment please?” I say.

Calla, Jasmine and Lily each kiss my cheek on the way out the door and I shut it behind them.

“Spill it.” I say to Zinnia

“I forgot what we were talking about?” Zinnia feigns innocence.

“I don’t understand why you are so cynical about love.”

“You didn’t see my dad fall apart when you went chasing your pot of gold at the end of your fucking rainbow in Alaska!” Zinnia yells.

“What do you mean fell apart?” I ask.
